On paper, it seemed like a perfect match: hotshot director John Boorman, fresh from POINT BLANK (1967) and DELIVERANCE (1972), taking the reins of a sequel to William Friedkin’s hugely successful THE EXORCIST (1973). What could possibly go wrong? Well… pretty much everything. Released in 1977, EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC was savaged on arrival and quickly became one of cinema’s most infamous sequels. But time has been surprisingly kind to the film, and its reputation has slowly started to shift. In BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL, director David Kittredge takes a deep dive into the film’s ambitious beginnings, chaotic production and strange afterlife, with plenty of insight and affection. Featuring candid interviews with Boorman, Linda Blair and Louise Fletcher, alongside defenders including Mike Flanagan and Karyn Kusama, it’s a fascinating look at one of Hollywood’s great cinematic disasters.
